a post about friends.

I have two really good childhood friends. Their names are Carl and Benny.
And we're really, really, really close.
At least, we WERE close.
We were always together throughout middle school and for a part of high school.
We would talk about Lord of the Rings, Star Wars and we all had common interests.
But lately, we just haven't seen each other. None of us has made an effort to make contact either.

Carl is a huge drama geek. He's the one that I mainly want to talk about.
He's an amazing person. He really is.
But it's getting difficult to have a conversation with him. We used to be able to talk hours and hours on end about absolutely everything and nothing at all. We made each other laugh, and we made each other mad too, but we always managed to tough it out together, no matter what happened.

Now when I see him, I have trouble making small talk, simply because I haven't seen him in so long.
And I never have trouble with small talk. I might not be good at a lot of things, but little, unimportant discussions is something I'm actually good at doing.

And now it's so awkward.
I mean, we both knew almost everything about each other.
I know that he idolizes Dwight from The Office and can quote anything from the show, especially when it involved Jim's pranks.
There was one time when I correctly named every shirt he owned, just because we were around each other so much.
If he was in front of me, I could tell if it was Carl or not because I knew the way that he walked.

Now when I see him, wearing a shirt I've never seen before, which is normally a reference to something I've never heard of, it's really weird.
I can't even converse properly with him, which used to be a given.
It's unsettling.

I need to work on communicating with him more. Maybe that would fix this.
Or maybe not.
We're both really awkward people.

i'm back! (sort of)

Hi everyone, it's been a while!
Do you remember me? If you don't even know who I am, or are seeing this on your dashboard and wondering who I was and where I went, let me fill you in.

I'm Fiona.
I'm a bit of an introverted, awkward nerd.
I like using big words because it makes me sound smarter than I actually am. But don't worry, it's just the thesaurus talking.

And now where was I?
Inside a time warp I call,
The world of high school.
(What you read just now was an excellent haiku. )

But all jokes aside, I've been extremely busy.
College is a looming, dark cloud that is fast approaching and I realized that I needed to start doing more things out of school in order to get accepted into a good one.
And juggling everything is, in short, brutal.
Somehow, I've managed to get straight A's, but everything is getting increasingly more demanding.
Meaning, my schedule is getting tighter and tighter.
Meaning, the amount of time I can spend looking at cute videos of kittens and reading Socially Awkward Penguin is drastically decreasing.
I've been decreasing the procrastination, so that's helped.

So yeah.
That is my very long and elaborate excuse to why I haven't been posting.

Also, I don't have as much time as I'd like for bloghopping. Of course, I might be able to find some time in the weekends, but I do want to follow some new blogs.
It would help a lot if you could give the link(s) to your blog or a blog you think I should read. If you have a good blog, I'm sure that I would eventually find it, but a direct link would save some time. I won't follow each and every link I receive, but I WILL take a look and probably comment.
I know this a bit selfish of me to ask for this, but please pardon it just this once! (:

Also, as a warning, I might disappear again for a while, but it's not because I've been eaten by a mythical creature, but my extreme workload has basically caught up to me.

impending doom.

One word. FINALS.
I think I might cry.

I've been procrastinating all year, somehow hoping that if I closed my eyes long enough they would go away.
Well, they haven't.

And I know that I have to pass all my classes or else I won't get accepted to a good college and then I won't get accepted into a good law school and I'll end up flipping hamburgers at McDonald's until I die a miserable death.
So in other words, I'm screwed.

And instead of a written English final this year, the department decided to something a little "different". The concept is that we research an artist and then create a piece with the artist's stylistic traits.
Which means that I have paint a picture in order to pass English.

So today, I did some research and chose Kandinsky. He's basically this guy who quit law school to paint and eventually married his cousin.
I picked him because he did abstract art which mainly consisted of circles.
He also used oil paints.

We're supposed to use the same materials our artists used to make things more realistic.
I wanted to use my Crayola washable paint from fifth grade, but when I asked if I could use it, my teacher gave me the stink eye.
And I assumed that equated to a no.

Which means I have to go out and buy some expensive canvas and then go buy some more expensive oil paints and then go buy some expensive paintbrush.
And then I have to go home and then draw some circles and hope it looks like a masterpiece.
And knowing my artistic ability, it won't.

Also, because of finals I won't be posting as much as I've used to.
And I'll probably be too busy oil painting circles to get on the computer anyway.

But if it doesn't turn out too bad, I'll take a picture of it and post it here. So you can enjoy my hard work.
You're welcome.

that awkward moment when you realize that you're short.

Every year, our school takes a photo of everyone in each grade.
So in homeroom, we had to line up by height. And I was the fifth shortest in my class.
The. Fifth. Shortest.

I refuse to believe that I'm short.
I went to my doctor yesterday, and she told me that I was average in terms of height.
Key word: Average. When did the word average turn into the word short?
Oh, that's right.
Never.

However, deep in my gut, I know that I'm a bit on the shorter side.
But do I accept it? No I do not.
So right now, I'm in this awkward situation where I'm in denial about being in denial.

One time in the waiting room of the dentist's office, I read this psychology magazine. And there was this article about hypnotism.
It said that in order to convince yourself of something, you should say it to yourself until you fully believe it.

And I've been doing that all day. Trying to convince myself that I'm tall.
I almost crashed into a wall at swim practice because my mind was so wrapped up with the problem of my height.
And I might as well do it now too.
For good measure.

I am tall.
I'm not short. I'm tall.
My height would make Yao Ming jealous and if the Empire State Building could think, it would be jealous too.
You, Fiona, are a boss and you are super tall.

...I think it's working.

day of silence.

Today, I didn't speak at all. At least, I tried not to.
Because today was our school's Day of Silence.
The purpose of this is to raise awareness about the harassment that gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning (GLBTQ) individuals face.
And because of the things they have to deal with, those who are GLBTQ may not be heard.
Which is why some of my peers and I chose not to speak today.
I'm glad that I did it.
But it was hard. Really hard.
And I'm not going to lie and say that I went the entire day without uttering a word.
Because I did need to talk a few times.
... please don't be mad at me.

And it was hard to do the most basic things.
I really needed to use a tissue, but I didn't know where they were.
Because I couldn't ask, I had to suffer through the rest of the class tissue-less.
Which was not fun.

But all in all, it was a good experience for me.
And it definitely raised my awareness about a topic I knew nothing about.
Which was the whole point, wasn't it?

my science class.

Teacher:  So, H, according to Table 3.1, what gas has a lower density than oxygen at room temperature?
H: Um, oak?
Teacher: No H, oak is a type of wood.
H: So... water?

LOL.

my head is swimming with numbers.

I have awful memorization skills.
I'm a person who struggles with those matching card games. The ones where you put all the cards face down and try to match them up.
I could never do them. Ever.
Since I would always forget where all the cards were.

This really hurts when I'm studying for tests.
Because I can't remember any of the dates.
Right now, I'm trying to review my notes for a History test on the Pre-Civil War period.
And I'm so frustrated because all the numbers in my head aren't lining up with the events.
The only date that I've got down in my head is my birthday.
And sometimes that gets fuzzy too.
Which only shows how much of an airhead I can be.

I apologize for taking this out on you guys.
I'm just not having a good week.
I think I could use a nap. Toodles.

a post about hoarding, flashlights and yogurt.

Here's an update on my life.
Because I feel like I don't talk about it enough.
-------
I've started to worry that I'm going to get lost in the wilderness. Because I feel like it's really likely that I'm going to go into one of the few forests left in America and die there.
With this belief in mind, I've started to hoard non-perishable items and bring my crank-powered flashlight everywhere.
Here's a picture!
Oh look, there's a handy crank in the back! How convenient!
I know it's stupid, but I do it anyway.
I've obviously read too many wilderness-survival novels.
-------
Yesterday, I wrote a phenomenal poem about bagels.

A warm aroma
Of freshly baked dough
Topped with cream cheese
A circle of happiness.

I would have made it a haiku, but I didn't know how many syllables each line was supposed to have and I was in history class at the time. Because that's what I do when I'm bored. I write poetry.
Since I'm super hardcore.
-------
You know what else I do when I'm bored?
Draw pictures.
I named it Fiona's Fantastical Ferocious Fish.
-------
My math teacher played Justin Bieber music all this week.
Since he has that movie coming out.
And plus all the girls in our class begged him to.
My teachers are pretty hardcore too. =]
-------
We've had a ridiculous amount of snow this winter.
I know I've already complained about this, but it's serious.
I haven't had a full week of school since the beginning of December because of snow days.
The snowbank at our house. The bike's there for comparison.
The snow's deeper than I am. So my dad thought it would be funny to completely bury me in snow.
I almost got hypothermia and died.
-------
I've been eating ridiculous amounts of yogurt lately.
I really like Chobani. That greek yogurt stuff.
It has a really subtle sour taste to it, which makes it really good.
I'm eating one right now. It's peach flavored.
(=
-------
Here's a picture of my desk.
Because I felt like taking one.
You can see the Chobani in the corner.

i get married.

As of now, I'm proud to announce that I am officially "married".
Yes lads, that means I'm no longer single.

I'm kidding.
I'm getting married to my insane Jewish friend. Her name is Alison.

It started out as a huge joke. But my friends decided to take it to the next level.
Here's the conversation that started it all:

Cast: (Nicknames are used to protect from creepers)
Me: An not-so-average asian girl.
Alison: An amazing Jewish girl who straightens her hair every day.
Kat: A half African-American and half White girl.
David: A guy who wears a brown hoodie and has curly hair.

Kat: Alison, sitting next to a guy typically means you are attracted to him.
David: <looks at Alison. who's sitting next to him>
Alison: *insert heaps of denial here*
Me: Kat she's mine. Alison and Fiona, couple of the year.
Alison: <laughs> Asian-Jew love, right here.
Kat: You should get married.
Me: I'm not buying the multi-million dollar ring.
Kat: THIS IS SO EXCITING.

The next day, I come into school with everyone knowing that I'm married.
And making assumptions.

Before I go on, I would like to let everyone know that I'm completely straight.
I mean absolutely no offense to anyone who is not like me. In fact, one of my best friends is gay.

So, moving on, everyone knows.
And it's quite embarrassing, to say the truth. I was only trying to help Alison out.

Thanks so much Kat.

But it wasn't all that bad.
Alison purchased me a strawberry flavored Ring Pop and proposed to me in a parking lot.
Because everyone knows that a parking lot is the most romantic place on earth.
That is, until we got kicked out by the store owner for "loitering".
Shame on him for not recognizing a proposal when he sees one.
I bet's he's not married.

We're making it facebook official tomorrow.

Because we all know that it's not legit until it goes on facebook.  :D <3 Fi

because everyone loves burning things... educationally

For as long as I can remember, I couldn't want to take IPS. (Introductory Physical Science) Last year, we could smell things on fire in their classroom from across the hall. Naturally, that got us fired up (Bahaha, fired up, things on fire, get it?) about taking that course the next year.

So this year, I put up with reading and signing of the safety contract.
I put up with the long talk on expectations.
I put up with learning of the format of our lab books.

Naturally, I couldn't wait for our first lab. You know, like, bring on the fire! Well, I guess I got what I wanted in a sense.
We get to heat random things up. One of them freezing and melting things over a burner.
Here's the a snippet of the intro paragraph of the lab:

We shall measure the freezing temperatures of some substances by using samples of different mass. For convenience, we shall use substances that freeze about room temperature. Your teacher will distribute test tubes containing different amounts of a solid substance. Immerse the test tube in a water bath. Heat the water until the solid in the test tube is completely melted.

Disappointing much? <3 Fi

my spanish class.

Teaching a language must be hard. Especially if you teach a class who forgot all the vocabulary and grammar rules over the summer.
But if you have the rule of no English, it's your own problem if you have a little trouble enforcing it.

A normal conversation in my class: (If it's in italics, it means it's in Spanish)

A: The answer to the pregunta is twenty uno.
B: I got twenty cuatro.
A: Well you're wrong.
Teacher: ¡Ustedes necesitan hablar espaƱol!
A and B:  Sorry. I mean, lo siento.
Brief pause.
A: I still can't believe you're going out with my ex-novio. I am so pissed and enojado at you.
B: Jeez, you're so sensitive!
A: My freaking NOVIO! What were you thinking?
B: He's bonito.
A: This is over. We are no longer amigos.
B: Fine. Adios.

I don't know about you, but I think it's hilarious how they manage to work in Spanish words while in a heated debate about boyfriends. Just so they don't get in trouble with the teacher. Ha.

Just wanted to share that tidbit with you all.

Adios, amigos. <3 Fi

welcoming the year with sweaty arms

My first day of school was hot, disgusting, and gross. I dressed smart and wore shorts. Applaud me. Please. A breakdown of my day...

7:50am: Homeroom && English. I was in the awkward situation where everyone knows one another but you. Everyone was discussing what they did over the summer. Exotic places they visited. I stayed at home. When I realized there were assigned seats, I gave a huge thank you to nobody in particular.

WhoKnowsWhen: An assembly. In which the entire grade was required to sit through another attack of rules for the school year. No texting in the bathroom. No wearing slutty clothing. No chewing gum and sticking it on the bottom of the desks. No talking in the hallways. No committing suicide in Algebra.

8:56am: Physical Ed. Health. Fitness. Whatever you call it, I have it second period. For the entire duration of 45 minutes, we sat in a sweltering hot gym, listening to an overly peppy teacher explain the new rules. But we weren't fooled. She was sweating too.

9:45am: History. I had one of those moments where you walk into a class, look around, then just scream in your head "OH. SHIT." Yep.
